Acadian culture has a very diverse and rich heritage. Most Acadian ancestors were first thrown out of France, and then thrown out of Canada/Nova Scotia. Even when they relocated to Louisiana, they were still persecuted. Until just recently, children were expelled or beaten if they spoke their language in the public school system. All of this and the acadians have managed to keep their sense of humor and their strong sense of family. Most people think "cajuns" are mysterious and a little dangerous, but they are just a little leery of "outsiders" (wouldn't you be?). But when they get to know you they will take you into their hearts and their communities. I am very proud to be descended from such a strong, courageous people.
